How to Add Flavouring to Your Cake

Almost all cakes start with basic ingredients such as flour, eggs, butter and sugar. So what separates the Victoria sponges from the lemon bars, are how you flavour them, so if you want to add a little extra punch to your bakes, we have some suggestions.

The best time to add flavouring to your cake is typically after the batter has been mixed together. You can try all sorts of different flavourings. Some favourite extracts are:

  • Vanilla
  • Almond
  • Rose
  • Rum
  • Brandy
  • Lemon
  • Coconut
  • Peppermint
You can also add spices, that add a bit of dimension of flavour to your batter, or to your icing.
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Cardamom
If you’re feeling inspired and want to add a flavour to your cake, whether it is delicious vanilla or cinnamon, just remember to add it at the cake mix stage and stir well so that it’s fully mixed though. Mmm!
