How to Make a Layered Cake?

What’s better than cake? Well, more cake, obviously. Learn how to make a layered cake so you can double, treble, quadruple how much goodness you put into your bakes. We will walk you through the process.

First, you’ll need to decide how many layers you’d like your cake to have as you’ll need to have the corresponding number of pans. The pans should also be the same size and shape.

  1. Choose which cake you’d like to bake. Vanilla sponge cakes and chocolate cakes work really well for this type of bake.
  2. Prepare your cake pans with baking paper. You can grease the baking paper with butter, and then dust it with a layer of flour to ensure your cakes come away from the pan smoothly.
  3. Mix your cake batter, and then pour. Weigh each pan as you go to ensure your three cakes have the same amount of mixture. This way, when they bake, they should create nice, even layers.
  4. When your cakes are out of the oven, let them fully cool. Once they are cool you can level your cakes so that each layer is flat on top. You can do this with a knife or with a cake level tool.
  5. With your prepared icing, place a dollop on a plate or cake stand. This will stop your first layer from moving as you ice it.
  6. Then pipe a layer of icing onto your cake working from the outside in. Then gently lay your next cake on top. Repeat this step between every layer.
  7. When you reach the top layer, it’s time to apply a crumb coat. This will fill in any gaps you have and seal the cake for the last layer of icing.
  8. Apply your last layer of icing.
Once you’ve mastered layer cakes, you can try your hand at all sorts of bakes, such as our Queen of Hearts Cake or our Moist Triple Layer Chocolate Cake.
